Faith reaches where reason will not
The conclusion of the truth of God’s existence is the converging pinnacle of rationality and faith. Neither reason or faith alone, while you are in the flesh, will let you know Him. It is by rationality that His presence is suggested but by faith His presence known.
Solomon’s wisdom instructs us how to weigh reason and faith.
Solomon wrote, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” - Proverbs 3:5-6
In other words, we are not to worry about our rational understanding but instead have absolute faith in the Lord God.
But is it only unwise to crave understanding instead of resting on faith? Can such unbelieving be called something more than unwise?
Many say that if only they saw a true miracle they would believe in God and worship Him. However, this is a lie. Jesus told the story of Lazarus in part to illustrate that some hearts are simply unbelieving, regardless of miracles.
Abraham said, “They will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” — Luke 16:31
Why are their hearts unbelieving? Why do miracles fail to produce the belief they claim to want? It is because of the evil in their hearts. Their desire is for themselves not for God. Thus they lack not only wisdom but goodness; they are not merely unwise but evil.
Jesus taught, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.” - Matthew 12:39
To require miracles, weighing so-called evidence, is to require God to meet one’s own expectation of His nature. But our expectations are evil because of the fall of man and the existence of sin in this world. Our rationality worships the expectations of man not the will of the Lord God.
God has already given as much evidence as is needed for a sinful world to love Him; it is not a lack of evidence that prevents one from doing so but evil. It is only by evil that one may look upon the goodness of His works and not love Him absolutely.
Paul wrote of this: “Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” - Romans 1:19
Such unbelievers have worshiped a false god; their so-called reason. It is because they are unknowingly enslaved to a kind of false reason which deceives and leads away from faith in God and instead towards death. Their reason is irrational! True reason leads only to faith in God. Freed of the evil of lies, one is illuminated with the peaceful and obvious truth of God’s existence and nature.
So be it to those who desire a belief in God based on their own understanding rather than their true love of Him. Know that such sickness is an evil whose cure has been sent. His name is Jesus, He is the messiah, the promised one, whom if you call upon in faith will truly cleanse you of this old evil of false understanding which has possessed not only you but the world which seeks your death.
